What happened
ASML reported record third-quarter net sales of €11.7 billion and a 57.5% gross margin on October 14. It guided to €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion of fourth-quarter sales and raised its full-year sales outlook to €44 billion to €45 billion, from at least €43 billion. Those are current results and near-term guidance; the more distant signal came from customer planning.
Chief executive Christophe Fouquet said customers continue to raise their short- and medium-term equipment forecasts because of the expected size and duration of AI investment. ASML now expects its currently planned supply for 2027 and 2028 to fall short of that demand, despite a previously announced plan to increase 2026 low-NA EUV and DUV immersion capacity by 30% in 2027 and an investigation into a further 30% increase for both in 2028. Some customers have expressed interest in placing orders for 2029 and 2030. Interest is not an accepted order, a shipment, or recognized revenue.
Why it matters
ASML sits farther upstream than the model labs, cloud platforms, and chip designers making the loudest AI announcements. Advanced fabs cannot add leading-edge capacity without its lithography systems, particularly extreme-ultraviolet machines. That makes ASML's present sales and order conversations a useful cross-check on whether the physical buildout extends beyond one company's capital-expenditure promise.
The signal is durable because fabs and lithography capacity take years to plan, finance, construct, and qualify. A chipmaker discussing 2030 tools is making assumptions about future accelerator, memory, and foundry demand today. But long lead times can also encourage customers to reserve scarce capacity defensively. Forecasts may overlap, orders can move, export controls can change the customer mix, and ASML explicitly warns that future interest may not become sales.
Scarcity also changes who captures the economics. Reuters reported that ASML plans price increases beginning in 2027 while using upgrades to raise the throughput of machines already installed. If new-tool supply remains constrained, productivity software, service, allocation, and price become as important as unit volume.
What to watch
Watch disclosed bookings and backlog conversion, the actual 2028 capacity plan, shipment timing, and whether customers keep their place when pricing rises. TSMC, Samsung, Intel, SK Hynix, and Micron capital plans will show whether the same confidence appears in fabs, advanced packaging, and memory rather than only ASML's conversations.
The maniacal take: the AI boom has acquired an industrial calendar. The hard evidence is €11.7 billion of quarterly sales and a supplier that expects planned capacity to be insufficient. The 2030 conversations matter because they expose the horizon of customer planning—not because they make 2030 revenue real today.
